In 1929, originally named as the Portsmouth Spartans, the team was based then in Portsmouth, and play their home games at Ford Field in downtown Detroit as an independent professional team. The Spartans formally joined the NFL in the 1930 season. Later, on the 1934 season, the Spartans was purchased and moved to Detroit, and renamed as the Detroit Lions.
